An Honest Answer to a Question We Get a Lot
Homeowners ask us all the time why we don't carry vinyl siding. It's a fair question — vinyl is the most common siding material in the country, it's inexpensive, and plenty of houses in Skagit County are already wearing it without obvious problems. We're not here to tell you vinyl is a scam or that everyone who installed it made a mistake. We're here to explain, plainly, why our crews stopped installing it and why every job we bid gets quoted in James Hardie fiber cement instead.
This isn't a marketing angle. It's a standard we set after years of doing tear-offs, warranty calls, and repair estimates on siding that other contractors installed. Vinyl has real strengths. It also has real weaknesses that show up faster and more visibly in a marine climate like ours than they do in drier parts of the country. Here's the honest version.

What Vinyl Siding Actually Gets Right
Credit where it's due, because a "why-not" page that pretends a product has no upside isn't useful to anyone:
- Lower upfront material cost than fiber cement, which matters on tight budgets.
- Fast installation for crews that specialize in it, since panels snap together with minimal cutting.
- No painting required out of the box — the color is molded through the panel, not applied to the surface.
- Widely available in a huge range of colors, profiles, and price tiers.
For a dry climate, a short hold period before resale, or a strict budget ceiling, vinyl is a legitimate choice for a lot of contractors. It's just not the choice we're willing to stand behind on homes that have to survive Skagit County weather for the next 30-plus years.
Why Our Climate Changes the Math
Vinyl siding was engineered for a national market, not for Puget Sound weather specifically. Three things about our environment work against it in ways that don't show up in a showroom sample:
Salt Air
Homes closer to Skagit Bay and the surrounding saltwater shoreline deal with airborne salt that accelerates wear on fasteners, trim, and any exposed seams. Vinyl itself doesn't corrode, but the thin aluminum or steel nails and trim pieces used around it can, and salt-laden moisture finds its way into every gap a panel system creates.
Driving Rain
Skagit County doesn't just get rain — it gets wind-driven rain that hits walls at an angle, especially on west- and south-facing exposures. Vinyl siding is installed as an overlapping shell, not a sealed skin. It's designed to let water get behind it and drain back out, which works fine when it works as designed. It works a lot less well after 10 or 15 years of expansion, contraction, and minor panel movement have opened up the laps and channels it depends on.
A Long Moss Season
Western Washington's moss and mildew season runs most of the year, not just a few wet months. Vinyl's textured, low-gloss finish and its horizontal laps give algae and moss plenty of places to grab hold, particularly on north-facing walls and anywhere near overhanging trees — which describes a lot of Skagit County lots.
How Vinyl Behaves Once It's Actually on the Wall
Vinyl siding has to be installed loose. That's not a defect — it's the design. Panels are hung with a gap at the nail slot so they can expand and contract with temperature swings without buckling. That single requirement is also the source of most of the long-term problems we see:
- Buckling and waviness when panels are nailed too tight (a very common installer mistake) or when temperature swings exceed what the panel can absorb.
- Cracking in cold snaps — vinyl gets brittle in freezing temperatures, and a hard impact from a ladder, a thrown branch, or even a pressure washer wand can crack or shatter a panel that would shrug off the same hit in warmer weather.
- Water tracking behind the panels at inside corners, window returns, and butt joints, where it can sit against the sheathing and framing without anyone noticing until there's a soft spot.
- Fading and chalking from years of UV and moisture cycling, especially on darker colors, which cannot be corrected by pressure washing and are difficult to repaint properly.
None of this means every vinyl-clad house in Skagit County is falling apart. It means the material's real-world performance depends heavily on installation quality and on a climate that doesn't stress-test it as hard as ours does — and we'd rather not gamble a homeowner's wall assembly on both of those going right for three decades.
Fire and Impact: The Trade-Off Nobody Points Out at the Sample Rack
Vinyl siding is a petroleum-based plastic product. It's not going to spontaneously combust, but in a wildfire-adjacent event or a close exterior fire (a neighboring structure, a burn pile, an electrical fault at a meter panel) it will soften, melt, and burn well before fiber cement does anything at all. Fiber cement siding is noncombustible by composition — it's cement, sand, and cellulose fiber, not plastic. In a region where summer wildfire smoke and drought-stressed vegetation are now a normal part of the season, that's not a hypothetical difference.
Installation Sensitivity Is the Real Story
Most vinyl siding failures we've been called out to inspect trace back to installation, not the product itself. Vinyl is unforgiving of shortcuts in a way that isn't obvious until years later:
- Nailing too tight restricts the expansion the panel needs, causing buckling in warm weather.
- Nailing too loose lets panels rattle, sag, or blow off in wind events — and Skagit County gets real wind off the water.
- Skipping proper starter strips, J-channel, and flashing details at windows and doors invites water behind the assembly.
- Manufacturer warranties are typically prorated and installation-dependent, meaning a botched install can void coverage that looked strong on paper.
The problem is that a homeowner has no way to verify any of this by looking at the finished wall. It looks fine on installation day. The consequences show up five, ten, fifteen years later — long after the installer has moved on.

- Does the warranty require a specific fastening or flashing method, and will the installer document that they followed it?
- How does this material perform specifically in wind-driven rain and salt air, not just "average" climate conditions?
- What does repair or partial replacement look like in 10–15 years — can it be color-matched, or will it stand out?
- Is the material combustible, and does that matter for your home's location and insurance?
